From the first camera to the 45 billion cameras worldwide, sociologists of visual film expand their field of vision to reveal humanity’s unique obsession with the camera image and the social consequences that await us. I saw it at the Ghant Film Festival (Belgium) in 2023. There is no coherent line of thought, just a kaleidoscopic and anecdotal series of ideas. I admit that it is not easy to cover two centuries, as well as to combine photography and recording, all in a limited time of almost 90 minutes. Of course, we are talking about the contemporary problems of social media, but also their negative consequences. Unfortunately, it does not attempt to balance the democratic benefits of anyone being able to create new content and distribute it, regardless of official journals and studies. In general, the sections on the history of photography and filmmaking are much better and more informative than the sections on the present and the future. Personally, I didn’t find any new ideas or open my eyes in this movie.
